Travel and Dehydration

I think that the more that I travel the more that I notice myself suffering from the effects of dehydration. I often am jolted from sleep with my calf muscles seizing up (one of the most painful symptoms of dehydration), my contacts are dry and irritate my eyes even days after I get off the plane, my skin looks ruddy and my clothes hang as if I bought them a size too big (admittedly, a more welcome effect, but definitely not entirely healthy). Add to this the fact that when you are jet lagged you double up on coffee and tea (you should drink an extra glass of water for every caffeinated beverage you consume), which only compounds the fact that your body is lacking in moisture. Yes, I could carry water with me everywhere I go, but because you can’t carry liquids through security and the airports charge an arm and a leg for a bottle of generic water this clearly isn’t helping the problem. So I’m constantly trying to trick myself into taking in more water. The best solution I have found is to eat as much fruit as possible. This is especially easy in the summer when berries are everywhere and cheap. And because berries are an excellent source of antioxidants, they also help the body to battle against the free radicals it faces when traveling. Making sure you a fully hydrated before you travel is always a good idea too. It’s a battle I am constantly fighting… how about you?
